2024 NABMSA Conference Call for Papers

The North American British Music Studies Association invites presentation proposals for the Eleventh Biennial NABMSA Conference, 25-28 July 2024. We celebrate the 20th anniversary of our first conference with a return to Oberlin College & Conservatory, Oberlin, Ohio, which hosted us in 2004.

We welcome abstract submissions of no more than 500 words on any topic related to British music in its broadest definition, from antiquity to the present day. We encourage those that draw upon interdisciplinary or broader cultural contexts (e.g., ethnomusicology, cultural studies, critical race theory, popular music studies, subaltern studies, etc.).

The conference will be hybrid, with in-person and virtual options available for both presenters and attendees. Presentations may take a variety of formats, including individual papers (20 minutes + 10 minute discussion), themed panel sessions (90 minutes, which should include time for discussion), workshops involving group participation (90 minutes), roundtable discussions (60 or 90 minutes), and lecture-recitals (45 minutes + 15 minutes of discussion). The program committee seeks submissions from scholars at any level and those serving within and outside of academia. The Nicholas Temperley Prize will be awarded for the best scholarly presentation given by a graduate student, and all students with accepted papers are eligible to apply for the Byron Adams travel grant.

Please submit your abstract proposal by e-mail to nabmsa2024@gmail.com in the following format: in the body of the e-mail

  1. your name (as you would want it to appear on the program)

  2. the title of your presentation or panel

  3. your preference for in-person or virtual format, and the other technical requirements; as an e-mail attachment (doc or pdf): your abstract with the presentation title but no other identifying information

That e-mail account will not be monitored until 15 January; if you submit before that date, you should expect a confirmation e-mail around 15 January; it will be monitored daily thereafter until 5 February.
